Steven Poacher says that the Down players should not have been criticised for taking a beer after last weekend’s draw with Cork.
Poacher hit back at those who said the Mourne men should not have celebrated as they did on the bus.
“The Down lads were heavily criticised in some quarter for pictures appearing on social media of them drinking bottles and cans of beer on the bus on the way home from Cork at the weekend.
“But let’s be honest, they deserve it, because the way football is going in some counties it would drive you to drink.
“To all the coaches who can influence things out there, let’s end this madness and let’s bring the fun back.”
In the rest of the column Poacher was critical of the excessive amount of coaching that is going on at county level, in particular he highlighted Davy Fitz’s extreme trainng regimes.
