ST Mary’s have booked their spot at the Sigerson Cup weekend after shocking Dublin City University, but they will not be joined by Ulster University who were hammered 1-18 to 0-9 by University College Dublin.
Paddy Tally’s men led by four points with 25 minutes remaining but two Enda Smith goals appeared to have ended their hopes before a stirring fightback, capped off by a last-gasp Cathal McShane point, forced extra time.
A Brian Og Magilligan goal 30 seconds into extra time put them in the driving seat, and they managed to fend off DCU’s fightback to secure a famous 2-14 to 2-13 win.
With an array of top inter-county talent on show, UU were tipped to go far in this competition but a quarter-final was as far as they could get as UCD tore them apart.
The visitors were unfortunate to only lead by a point at the break as they gave up a number of goal chances, but a strong start to the second half and a goal from Conor McCarthy sealed their passage. UU finished the match with 13 players following Gareth McKinless and Ronan McNamee’s dismissals.
