Warrenpoint mourn the passing of Aisling McGivern

By Shaun Casey

WARRENPOINT GAA are mourning the untimely death of Aisling McGivern, who was a leading member of the club’s committee and held the position of PRO. The McGivern family are “steeped in Warrenpoint” says ladies manager Brian Murphy.

Aisling was heavily involved in a number of different aspects of the club, representing Warrenpoint in both Scór na nÓg and Scór competitions and played a proactive role in promoting culture and Irish dancing.

She co-ordinated and organised many successful club social and fundraising events and was also part of the Down PR committee. Her hard work saw her win national communications GAA MacNamee Awards at both club and county level.

“It’s just terrible. Everybody is just in total shock,” said Murphy. “Aisling led the PR side of things for so many years, she was the PRO, and she was really at the front of everything, everything good that was going on, she was at the front of it.

“She was always supporting everybody no matter what it was, she was in the middle of it and always trying to promote all sections of the club. Right from recitals right up to Ulster finals, she did everything. She was involved in dancing, in Scór and everything.

“Way back when social media was only really getting started, she was at the forefront of getting it out there and getting the club on Facebook and whatever else, I’m not really into that side of it to be honest.

“But she was the one putting the club on Facebook and Twitter and all those social media pages and she would have been getting to grips with how it all worked.

“She was actually then asked onto the Down County PR committee because she knew everything that was going on and she was influential in that as well.”

The Warrenpoint ladies take on Downings in the Ulster final this weekend, but as a mark of respect, the club facilities have been closed for most of the week.

“We have closed everything and it’s the respectful thing to do,” added Murphy. “Her parents and the entire family are steeped in Warrenpoint so out of respect we have cancelled everything.”
