Rivals will want to knock us off perch says Ederney boss

By Niall Gartland

EDERNEY boss Mickey Cassidy senses that his team are ready for more after winning the club’s first Senior Championship title in 52 years.

The players will retire as heroes after defeating Derrygonnelly in the final back in September, but in a recent Gaelic Life interview,

Christopher Snow and Declan Deazley insisted that they would love to prove that they’re not a one-hit wonder.

Cassidy, a man who has given incredible service to the club down the years, said: “That seems to be the overall attitude in the camp. None of the players have contacted me to say they’re retiring or not coming back, and we should even have a few absent players back this year.”

He elaborates that Manus Maguire and Aaron Dennison should be back to bolster their panel this year, adding that overcoming Derrygonnelly in the final was a massive ‘monkey off the back’.

“It was my fourth year in charge in my latest stint. We were well beaten by Derrygonnelly in a championship final.

“We didn’t perform at all that day, and there was a league final that never ended up getting played.

“So it was a big monkey off the back.”

While Ederney weren’t overly cocky in the lead up to their victory over Derrygonnelly, Cassidy detected that the players were in steely mood, rather than getting caught up with the occasion.

“The last time we were in the final before that we played the occasion.

“This time the lads were totally determined and totally focused on the game and taking it minute-by-minute.

“It was all about the game of football, not about riding an emotional bandwagon. You won’t win games on emotion.

“We knew we were coming up against a very good team which is back-boned by county players.

“But we knew we could beat them if we played to our potential as we’d run them tight in games before and knew there were times when we’d thrown it away.”

Cassidy is also experienced enough to know that their rivals in Fermanagh will stop at nothing in their efforts to knock them off their perch later in the year when the games return.

“Without a doubt, and I think the championship will be stronger again this year.

“Derrygonnelly will want to set the record straight, there’s an up-and-coming Enniskillen Gaels team.

“Kinawley are strong and only a fool would write off Roslea.

Roslea are a championship team and if they have the right personnel on the field, they’re a tough team to beat.”
