In-form Breffni gunning for four in-a-row

By Niall Gartland

CAVAN’S streak of three straight victories means they still have a slim chance of promotion as they look ahead to their penultimate Division Two clash against Roscommon this Sunday.

Barring an incredibly unlikely chain of events, the Breffni County secured their Division Two safety in a hugely entertaining win over Down nearly a fortnight ago.

Six points is the magic number and that’s where they stand with two rounds remaining following successive wins over Louth, Offaly and Down.

Roscommon have also being motoring along nicely, though they were stopped in their tracks on their last day out, falling to their first league defeat against Meath, who ran out 2-18 to 0-17 victors on the day.

The Rossies, who dropped out of Division One last year, arrived in Navan as favourites with an umblemished record, but they had no answer in the second-half to a pacy and powerful Meath side.

In that sense, it was possibly a bit of a rude awakening, but they have an opportunity to restore confidence against Cavan this Sunday.

The Breffni County are in good form at the moment and positives from their recent win over Down included the performances of Gearóid McKiernan, Gerry Smith, James Smith, Ciarán Brady, Jason McLoughlin and Oisin Kieran, key leaders who have all stepped up to the plate in recent weeks. Barry Donnelly enjoyed a good debut, while Cian Madden and Cormac O’Reilly got crucially important game-time.

It wasn’t the perfect performance – they conceded too many avoidable scores and their performance took a dive in the third quarter before their stirring finish to proceedings, but they’re still in a good place at present and will be quietly confident of chalking up another win this weekend ahead of their final round encounter at home to Cork on Sunday week.
