FORMER Derry manager Rory Gallagher is not being considered for a return as Oakleaf boss Gaelic Life can confirm.
The news comes as Derry continue the search for Mickey Harte’s successor after his decision to step down after one year in the post.
Gallagher was appointed as manager in 2019 and went on to steer Derry to back-to-back Ulster titles as well as a return to Division One
The former Donegal and Fermanagh boss stepped away from the role on the eve of the 2023 Ulster win over Armagh following allegations of domestic abuse on social media by his estranged wife Nicola.
Ciarán Meenagh took over as manager for the rest of the 2023 season before stepping away.
Mickey Harte was appointed to the role at the start of the 2024 season, leading the Oakleafers to the National League title.
Following their championship exit, Harte stepped down from the manager post and has since been appointed as the joint manager of Offaly.
Derry GAA asked clubs for nominations with a deadline at the end of July but the post remains vacant.
With intense speculation around the county, Gallagher and new Tyrone manager Malachy O’Rourke were among the candidates linked to the role.
Gallagher, who is currently coaching Monaghan side Corduff, via a statement from his legal representatives to The Irish News, indicated his desire to return to intercounty management.
Derry join Westmeath, New York and Clare as the counties yet to appoint a senior football manager for next season after Monaghan’s appointment of Gabriel Bannigan and Robbie Brennan taking over in Meath this week.
