Cavan eye third successive win

By Michael McMullan

IT’S four years since Cavan appeared in their only Lory Meagher Cup final and with two wins from two, they’ve a chance to add to their 2025 momentum.

Next up is the visit of Lancashire this weekend. After a comfortable win over Warwickshire in Birmingham, Ollie Bellew’s charges were winners over Monaghan on home soil on Saturday afternoon.

On the face of it, 2-20 to 1-14 appears comfortable. Scratch the surface and the Breffni Blues needed late interventions from Shane Briody and Mattie Hynes to close the door on the Farney goal threat.

Cavan were nine points ahead by half time but didn’t push on after a scrappy second half.

That said, they’ve four points on the table from two games played and can begin to look forward to the business end of the season.

Liam O’Brien pinged 11 points as Cavan overcame Monaghan with their goals coming from Nicky Kenny and Seán Keating.

It was a mixed league for Cavan. There were wins over Cavan and Ulster rivals Armagh.

They were also competitive away to Christy Ring Cup side London in Ruislip.

Now it’s championship time and the focus is on pinning together results but they’ll have the comfort of playing at home this weekend.

Further down the line, New York – thanks to a 77 per cent vote in favour at Congress, will enter the competition at the semi-final stage.

It’s unfair on the rest of the counties who have been slugging it out.

Until then, Cavan have eyes on other days like this weekend and ensuring they get two more points in the bag.
