By Michael McMullan

SLEACHT Néill dual player Jack Cassidy is the latest Irish player aiming for a career in American Football.

Cassidy plays in goals in football and had a spell in the Derry squad under Mickey Harte last season.

A freetaker as an outfield player in his underage days, he was drafted into the club’s senior team as a goalkeeper before getting the call for Derry.

A skillful hurler, he was part of the club’s Ulster winning team last season.

The former Derry u-20 All-Ireland hurling winning captain played for the Oakleafers in their opening game of the league last month.

Speaking after Saturday’s defeat at the hands of Down, manager Johnny McGarvey confirmed Cassidy had left the panel.

Gaelic Life understands Cassidy is following the trial process via the International Player Pathway.

Tadhg Leader, of Leader Kicking, also posted a video of Cassidy on trial on his profile on X over the weekend.

“He blew me away with his natural ability. Excited to see where he can get to in the coming weeks/months,” he commented.

Cassidy is another Derry man pursuing a career in the sport after Jude McAtamney and Jack Scullion making the move in recent years.

McAtamney began with a career at Rutgers University before being snapped up by the New York Giants.

Former Derry u-20 ‘keeper Scullion also impressed at trials and was snapped up to take McAtamney’s place in the Rutgers’ roster.

Charlie Smyth, a former Down u-20, goalkeeper has also made the move to the NFL with the New Orleans Saints.
