Big weekend for Ulster hurlers

By Shaun Casey

IT’S a big weekend for Ulster hurling teams as several have a chance of reaching their respective league finals.

Derry and Donegal rest at the top of Division 2B with a league final spot guaranteed for the Oak Leaf County ahead of their clash with London.

Their 0-23 to 0-15 victory over Donegal in the last round sees Dominic McKinley’s men stay top on head-to-head, even if the sides end up on the same points.

The prize for Donegal is a place in the semi-final given their superior head-to-head record over Sligo and London, who form the chasing pack.

Armagh will book their place in the Division 3A semi final with a win this weekend as they travel to Warwickshire.

Under the new management of Terrance ‘Sambo’ McNaughton, Armagh have lost out to front-runners Tyrone and Roscommon in recent weeks.

They must gain victory on Sunday because anything else will knock them out of the running, should Monaghan pull off a shock against Roscommon.

If both the Orchard and the Farney men emerge victorious, both will finish on six points but it’s Armagh who shall advance due to their head-to-head record.

The unbeaten pair of Tyrone and Roscommon sit at the top of the table, level on seven points apiece. Tyrone’s superior scoring difference will most likely see them through to the league final, with Roscommon guaranteed a semi spot.

Cavan have already learned their fate as they sit pointless at the bottom of the Division 3B league table.

Their round two loss to Lancashire, who sit two points above them, proved decisive as the Breffni Blues are unable to finish anywhere else other than bottom, even with a win.
