Tyrone Prove Too Strong for Derry in McKenna Cup Opener

Dr McKenna Cup 2019 Section C

Tyrone 0-20

Derry 0-11

From Odhrán Crumley at Celtic Park

Tyrone have cruised to victory with a nine point victory over Derry in Celtic Park, last years All-Ireland finalists having ten different scorers over the course of the game.

It was a game of many firsts with the introduction of the new rules, with David Mulgrew and Gareth McKinless claiming marks before pointing as the Red Hands led by two on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

The new hand pass rule where four or more hand passes in succession is deemed a foul played havoc with Derry falling foul on 6 occasions to Tyrone’s 3.

Mickey Harte’s men took control in the second half as debutants were handed to Matthew Murnaghan and Darragh Canavan son of, Peter.

Darren McCurry led the charge with five points while Kyle Coney pulled the strings in a fine return to the county set-up grabbing man of the match.

Neither side will play again until January 6th as Tyrone head to Thailand on a team holiday at the end of December.
