St.Mary’s have set up a quarter-final meeting with Maynooth after overcoming a resurgent Tralee IT challenge in a bone-crunching round three clash in Belfast this afternoon.
Shane McGuigan led the St.Mary’s cause kicking ten points over the course of the hour while he fought a heavyweight battle with Jack Savage who landed an personal tally of 0-8.
Tralee raced into an early five point lead with Conor Keane punishing a mishap in the opposition defence before rattling the net, his side led 1-2 to 0-1 after five minutes.
‘The Ranch’ replied as Stephen McConville chased a lost cause squaring across the face of goal for Niall Toner to punch into the net as the Kerry men lost captain Gavin Crowley to injury.
Savage and McGuigan traded frees before Dara Moynihan kicked his side into the lead on a half-time scoreline of 1-6 to 1-5.
Tralee would finish playing with 12 men as Dara Moynihan saw red while Conor Hurley and DJ Murphy kicked up late blacks sending them to the sin-bin.
Both sides were deadlocked with five to play when substitute Daniel McKinless put his side in front before three late Shane McGuigan frees sealed a place in the last eight.
