Referee overrules his own mother in dramatic Antrim SHC semi-final

Cushendall 2-16 St.John’s 0-22

The ‘Johnnies’ led twice in stoppage time but, were unable to see off the challenge of reigning Ulster Champions, Cushendall.

Shea Shannon landed what appeared to be a heroic winner with a sensational sideline cut before Alex Delargy landed a free at the other end to restore parity.

Padraig Nugent held his nerve, seconds after watching a free strike the post to nail the resulting 65′ and almost win the game for his team.

The controversy and novel subplot would unfold as Fergus McCambridge’s pointed effort was originally waved wide by the umpire and mother of match referee, Colum Cunning.

Cunning decided to overrule his mother and award the score with TV camera’s later confirming that he has indeed made the correct call.

Both sides will have to now do it all again…

Dunloy 0-20 Loughgiel 0-17

Eleven points from Conal Cunning helped Dunloy into the final of the Antrim Senior Hurling Championship.

It was nip and tuck for the duration with neither side able to edge ahead with the game level heading into the last ten minutes.

Scores from Cunning and Keelan Molloy sealed victory for the 2017 winners.
