Derry SFC: Slaughtneil the big winners as four remain

Four remain the Derry Senior Football Championship after an action packed weekend of quarter-final action.

Slaughtneil have went one year without John McLaughlin and they are keen to make sure that doesn’t extend till two.

In a five minute spell before the break they rattled off four scores to give them a lead they would never lose as Shane McGuigan kicked five points.

Brendan Rogers turned in a defence masterclass forcing untold turnovers before landing a score of his own.

Ballinderry would lose Gareth McKinless to injury early on which would hamper their chances before Sammy Bradley’s second half goal sealed victory.

Magherafelt 1-12 Ballinascreen 2-5

Magherafelt booked their place in the semi-final with a comprehensive win after a strong late showing killed off Ballinascreen.

It was all level at the break after a Benny Heron bundled home a high ball.

In the second stanza, Cormac Murphy’s goal put Magherafelt into a commanding lead before a fifty yard free from Benny Heron went straight into the net giving ‘Screen a glimmer of hope.

Two scores for substitute, Declan Martin rubberstamped a win and a last four spot for Magherafelt.

Glen 1-15 Lavey 2-6

Lavey seized the early initiative leading 1-3 to no score with late replacement, Anthony McGurk netting.

Glen recovered with Alex Doherty landing a stunning goal, racing clear and hitting the top left corner of the net to level the teams at the interval.

A fine solo goal from Shea Downey gave Lavey hope but late scores from Ciaran McFaul and Emmett Bradley sealed the deal.
