Derry SFC: County champions fall on weekend of shocks

It didn’t all go to plan in the opening round of the Derry Senior Football Championship, it was meant to be clear cut but, it turned out to be the opposite. 

Ballinderry 6-18 Dungiven 1-14

Ballinderry were ruthless in their hammering of a weary Dungiven team rattling the net six times on their way to a 19 point victory.

Coleraine 0-10 Magherafelt 1-8

The reigning County Champions fell at the first hurdle by the minimum with Emmett McGuckin who was on the bench for Coleraine FC in their Irish League game earlier in the day punching home to knock the holders out by the minimum.

Ballinascreen 2-14 Kilrea 0-9 

Ballinascreen eased into the next round with a comfortable win over over Kilrea who were left to rue their missed chances. Shane Mulgrew (who kicked 1-7) and Benny Heron got the majors.

Slaughtneil 2-11 Newbridge 1-6 

Slaughtneil will be looking to get their title back after missing out last year and they eased their way into the next round with goals Karl McKaigue Sé McGuigan.

Bellaghy 3-9 Banagher 3-12

Arguably the shock of the weekend as Banagher who had not won a competitive game this season shocked a well fancied Bellaghy team.

Tiernan Moore hit the net twice while Ciaran Lynch hit the other from a penalty.

Glen 0-0 Loup 0-0

Glenullin 0-11 Swatragh 3-12

Swatragh eased into the next round with a fairly handy win against a Glenullin team who struggled in Division 1B.

Greenlough 0-6 Lavey 0-12

In the Friday night game it was Lavey who made light work booking safe passage with minimum fuss. Cailean O’Boyle kicking 0-6.
