D-Day in the Allianz Hurling League – Ulster hurling round-up

It was D-Day for the Ulster counties in the Allianz Hurling League’s and there was elation and disappointment.

Antrim condemned London to relegation from Division 2B with a two point win over the exiles in Cushendall on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-17.

In Division 2B, Derry have made the league final despite losing to Wicklow in Ballinascreen.

The Oakleafers trailed for the vast majority of the game before ultimately losing to the side they will meet in next week’s final.

Richie Mullan hit nine points over the duration of the clash, but this wasn’t enough to stop his team falling to a 2-16 to 0-16 defeat.

It was heartbreak for Down in Newbridge as they fell to a four point defeat which ended their hopes of promotion.

The Mourne men rattled the net in the 38th minute of the game but further scores from the Leinster men ensured victory.

Staying in Division 2B, Donegal registered five goals in a sixteen point win against Warwickshire, both sides will now meet in next week’s relegation play-off.

While in Division 3A, Armagh have qualified for the league final despite losing to Tyrone at Healy Park.

Bryan McGurk, Damian Casey and Matthew Mulgrew grabbed the three Tyrone majors en-route to a six point victory.

Danny Magee registered the Armagh goal and he will be hoping to continue his scoring form into next week’s final with promotion to Division 2B a reality.

Monaghan claimed a narrow victory away in Louth, winning by the minimum.

Once again, it was Fergal Rafter that led the Farney men’s charge to end the league on a positive note.

While in Division 3B, there was an all-Ulster clash as Fermanagh hammered Cavan.

The game would have no baring on the promotion stakes as neither side could gain promotion.

But it was the Ernesiders who claimed the bragging rights with a 1-14 to 0-5 victory.
