Five Minutes With… Fermanagh’s Jonathan Cassidy

Name: Jonathan Cassidy

Age: 21

Occupation: Student

Teams played for: Fermanagh, Enniskillen Gaels, UUJ, St Joseph’s Enniskillen

Game you most enjoyed playing in?

Kildare at home in the league last year. It was a battle and the Fermanagh fans got behind us to get us over the line.

Game you least enjoyed playing in?

The club championship against Kinawley last year. The replay included. Two bad days. We just didn’t turn up.

What’s the worst pitch you’ve ever played on?

Newtownbutler. It’s tiny and the grass is up to your knees.

Toughest training session you’ve ever been involved in?

Anything with pre season runs.

What’s your preferred brand of gear?

Boots Nike. Murphy Gloves.

Most inspirational individual you’ve ever met?

My Nana. She’s a strong woman who went through few things.

Where do you like to go to celebrate?

We just keep it local in Enniskillen.

What do you like to do with you are not training/playing?

Just chill around the house, watch Netflix, and play Playstation.

Which character in any TV show/film are you most like?

I have been told that I am like Johnny Tightlips from the Simpsons. Some of these answers might just indicate that.

Which team mates (from any club/county) are the first you’d invite on a night out?

Lorcan McStravick. But he has just got a new woman so that might change things.

Which team mate is the worst dancer?

Brandon Horan sticks out.

Which team mate is the loudest in the changing room?

His nickname is ‘Dose’ for a reason. Declan McCusker.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen happy in training/during a match?

The one that sticks out is Cian Newman when he asked Ronnie Gallagher where in Fermanagh is St Gall’s. And he was serious.

What’s the worst excuse you’ve heard to get out of training and who did it come from?

Lorcan McStravick’s alarm clock. He needs a new one. It lets him down a lot.

Biggest ego?

Callum Jones.

Worst/best person to sit next to on the team bus?

Best is Dara McGurn. He’s always on Tinder and I’ve never seen him swipe left yet.

Worst/best person to share a room with on away days?

Dara McGurn. Lights out at 9.30.

Who has the best diet, and who has the worst?

Best, Eoin Donnelly.

Worst is Callum Jones. He was getting in a bad way before McDonald’s closed.

Toughest opponent you have played against?

Ultan Kelm. His pace is frightening.

Best or worst quote you have heard from a team mate/opponent/ manager?

Dara McManus – ‘If you are close enough to foul, you are close enough to tackle’.

Best manager you have played for?

That’s a tough one. I’ve had a lot of good managers and I couldn’t pick one.

What frustrates you most about the GAA?

Probably the rule changes.

What’s the best thing about being part of the GAA?

Passion, community, and the buzz of winning.
