Tyrone take step closer to survival with league win over Mayo

Tyrone 0-11

Mayo 0-9

TYRONE aren’t out of the woods yet, but they took a significant step towards Division One survival with a 0-11 to 0-9 victory over Mayo at O’Neill’s Healy Park this evening.

After what’s been a surprisingly lacklustre league campaign from the reigning All-Ireland champions, Tyrone flew out of the traps in the first-half with the assistance of a strong breeze and raced into a 0-8 to 0-3 at the interval.

Three majestic points from Peter Harte were a real highlight of the opening period while Conor Meyler and Rory Brennan also weighed in with eye-catching scores.

The defence was also in good shape with Mayo repeatedly finding themselves down blind alleys as a result of tenacious tackling from the likes of Frank Burns and Brian Kennedy.

Mayo were always going to fight back in the second-half with the winds at their backs and so it proved, hitting four points on the spin midway through the second-half to leave only a single point between the teams.

Tyrone, held firm, however with late scores from Darren McCurry and Darragh Canavan ensuring their second win of the league, which may be be enough to stay up depending on how other results go this weekend.
