AN enthusiastic promotion of Scor agus Scor Na Og within their area  earned the Watty Grahams club special recognition at their County Finals at the weekend.

They won the Celtic Cross for the best level of Scor participation during 2015. It was the icing on the cake during a night that saw them win three separate titles.

In the Ceili Dancing section, the club maintained its proud record of achievement and followed this up with victory in the Set Dancing category as well. Topping all of that, the club’s Ballad Group also claimed the Derry title.

It was, therefore, a particularly satisfactory night for Watty Grahams. The club’s cultural officer, Louise Strathern says that participation in Scor offers many of its members an opportunity to take part in GAA activities.

“Many of those who are competing don’t play camogie or football, so they certainly enjoying Scor and Scor Na Og,” she said.

“We generally have full participation in each of the categories in both Scor and Scor Na Og, and in many of them we have two representatives. That’s reflective of the levels of interest in our cultural activities.

“Our club usually starts preparing for Scor Na Og in August, about 10 weeks prior to the county competition begins.

“This gives those who are involved the chance to practise twice or three times weekly and just helps them to develop their performances over a sustained period of time.”

Watty Graham’s and the rest of the clubs involved are facing will have a hectic two weeks.

First the Ulster semi-finals are on this Saturday night at 7pm, in Glenullin. Competing counties will be – host county, Derry, Donegal, Down and Tír Eoghan.

Adjudications will be carried out by the remaining Ulster counties.

First and second placed competitors will qualify for the finals.

This will be followed very quickly by the Ulster Final on Saturday 20th February in St Patrick’s High School, Downpatrick.

The All Ireland Final, for the successful Ulster Champions, will be in INEC, Killarney on 2nd April.
