Drew Wylie has become an almost ever-present on the Monaghan teamsheet

CONOR McManus will be out to prove a point in Monaghan’s Ulster Championship preliminary round clash against Fermanagh on Saturday, according to their ever-reliable full-back Drew Wylie.

Too often the charge levelled at Monaghan has been an overreliance on Conor McManus, but the emergence of Jack McCarron seems to have addressed that problem.

In 2016, McManus was responsible for roughly 46 per cent of Monaghan’s scores. In this year’s league, he was actually operating at half that with McCarron actually emerging as the side’s top scorer.

Wylie said the return to fitness of the Currin man was a huge boost for the squad, but he warned against anyone thinking that McManus was ready to step away from the spotlight.

“We knew in the early stages that there was something in Jack and that he was going to come good. He has come through an awful lot. He had a cruciate injury, he chipped a bone in his ankle, last year, he did his shoulder.”

He added: “It’s great to take some of the pressure off Conor but I’m sure he’s out to shine too.”
