MAYO selector Tony McEntee and Scotstown boss Mattie McGleenan are the latest names believed to be in the frame for the vacant Cavan senior management role.
A source within the county suggested that the Cavan county board have been waiting for Sunday’s All-Ireland final between Mayo and Dublin to pass before kick-starting the interview process, further indicating that McEntee is a possible candidate to succeed Terry Hyland as senior manager.
The Armagh native steered Crossmaglen to two All-Ireland club titles in 2011 and 2012 and his reputation as one of the best in the business has held firm in his role as Stephen Rochford’s assistant with Mayo this season.
Scotstown boss Mattie McGleenan is also believed to be held in high regard by the Cavan County Board. The Tyrone man guided Scotstown to their first Monaghan Senior title in 20 years in 2013, and they regained their title last year before making it to an ill-fated Ulster final appearance against Crossmaglen.
It’s likely that four or five candidates will be interviewed before a committee is put together to push towards a final decision.
Former Dublin manager Pillar Caffrey has been linked to the role, but it now appears unlikely that he will be in the hunt. Anthony Cunningham was believed to be in the race for the Limerick position, which has now been filled by their U21 manager John Kiely.
That leaves the door open for his possible candidacy as well, but it’s more likely that Cavan will look towards an Ulster man.
