Despite their McKenna Cup final loss, Damian Barton will be enjoying the limelight of the first season in charge of the Derry team.
Part of the reason for that is Barton has adopted the very popular gameplan of attacking football.
Yet how his team deals with the blanket defences they are expected to come up against in the league will decide whether Barton goes into the championship on a high or under pressure.
With that in mind, Fantasy managers have to ask ourselves the question, will Derry’s scoring unit do much damage?
Here’s four players to consider.
Niall Holly (full back): Named as a full back, as that was where he played last season, but there’s a good chance that Barton will play him in a more advanced role which could make for big scores.
Mark Lynch (midfielder): Down as a midfielder, we know he can score, the only concern is his fitness. He pulled up with a groin strain in the McKenna Cup. If he pulls up in the league, your fantasy season is over. Risk or reward.
Sean Leo McGoldrick (half back): Plays in defence but will get forward for scores. If Derry keep a tight defence, he’ll be even more valuable.
Ryan Bell (full forward): Bell is a confidence player. When he’s on, he will destroy the opponents. When he’s off his game you’ll be cursing him. But Barton’s a fan of his, and should get the best out of ‘Sucky’.
