Ederney St Joseph’s open new prunty pitch

JUST over a week ago Fermanagh senior champions Ederney played their first match in two seasons at their own home grounds after a complete refurbishment of their pitch.

While they lost narrowly to Belleek, it was still a red letter day for the club, and the hard work behind the scenes goes on as they are still working on getting their facilities completed.

To that end, the club is undergoing a sponsored walk aimed at raising funds of £35,000.

Friends and supporters of the club across Ireland, USA, Australia and England have been encouraged to get involved and to send in their photographs.

It marks the 40th anniversary of Ederney’s original sponsored walk to Croke Park.

Back in 1981, they left Ederney on Wednesday, August 19, led by the late Peter Harte, President of Ulster GAA Council.

They arrived for the All-Ireland Senior Football semi-final between Down and Offaly.

The money from the walk assisted in the purchase of the land for the club’s present facilities in the village.

The main thrust of the current effort is local, with members traversing the local roads in step with those who are completing the 40 miles on the community pathway in the club grounds.

The event culminates today (August 23) and you can donate on ederneystjosephs.co.uk.
