Owen Duffy wants to go from bit-part player to key starter with Monaghan

THE unusual thing about Owen Duffy’s championship career with Monaghan is that there have been 14 appearances in all, evenly split between starts and substitute appearances.

In the games that he has been in from the beginning, he has contributed 0-6. From the bench he has kicked 1-8. It’s no wonder that he is developing a ‘super sub’ tag.

The 30-year-old came on for the final 28 minutes of the preliminary round win over Fermanagh, kicked three points and was named Man of the Match almost everywhere. He hopes that cameo will be enough to get him a starting spot at Kingspan Breffni Park this weekend.

“I think every player wants to be in from the start and I’d be lying if I said I was happy just coming on.  Against Fermanagh, the way the game panned out I could have been gone after 40 minutes (if he had started). When I came in it did happen to loosen up.

“’Super sub’ has been bandied about a bit but I don’t pass much remarks on it. You want to get in as much football as you can at this level and my main objective in training over the last couple of weeks has been trying to get in from the start. Only Malachy will decide that though.”
