Donegal proving to have more around the edges

By Michael McMullan

DONEGAL have another chance to run eyes over their entire panel this weekend with a trip to Mayo.

Manager Jim McGuinness has stressed the importance of staying in the division.

With their top-flight status secured, the management took the chance to reshuffle their deck last weekend.

Donegal made 11 changes from their win over Derry with nine players who started in Ballyshannon not listed in the 26 last weekend.

With the Ulster Championship opener with Derry coming on the heels of a possible league final, Donegal’s selection policy is valid.

It’s a team prerogative to look after their own house and early wins have presented Donegal with that opportunity.

Now to the point. When all the ifs and buts have been stripped back, Donegal’s performance against a Tyrone team hunting for points will be pleasing.

Odhrán McFadden-Ferry got more minutes after missing last season with injury. Finbarr Roarty got another look at what senior football looks like.

Caolan McColgan put his hand up after lanhing a two-point score. Gavin Mulreaney got airtime between the posts.

Michael Murphy was handed a first start. Jamie Brennan had the chance to blow out the cobwebs after misfiring against Derry. The four points won’t have done him any harm.

Donegal’s focus will be getting Michael Langan and Jason McGee back in full fitness.

Mayo’s impressive use of rotation in their attack will give Donegal something to think about and Aidan O’Shea’s presence means there is a real test for someone to prove themselves against him.

A league final berth would mean more to Mayo than Donegal trying to cram another game in before Derry.

Donegal value the Ulster Championship. McGuinness has voiced his opinion on how the front door is the best opening for progress.
