CAVAN’S first ever All-Star, Ollie Brady, has issued his congratulations to the three Breffni players were awarded with the prestigious accolade last week.
Prior to Thomas Galligan, Raymond Galligan and Padraig Faulkner adding their names to the role of honour list, only two other Cavan men had won All-Star awards – Brady in 1978 and Dermot McCabe in 1997 (though a number of others won unofficial Cuchulainn’s awards presented from 1963 to 1967, before the All-Stars started up in 1971).
Speaking to Gaelic Life earlier this week, Brady said: “Heartiest congratulations to the lads. They were underdogs the whole way through and surprised everyone with a great win in the Ulster final against Donegal.
“Padraig Faulkner actually teachers in our little village in Redhills. They’ve put Cavan back on the map again, it wasn’t before time and we can’t be waiting another 20 or 30 years for All-Stars in Cavan.”
Brady says the team he played on back in the day deserved to share in his award.
“I was lucky we had a good run and I was honoured and privileged to win an All-Star in 1978 at centre half-back. We’d a very good team at the time so I got the award on the team’s behalf really.”
