Last weekend, St Ronan’s Lurgan won the Hogan cup by a point to defeat Rice college in the final at Croke Park.
Oisin Smyth hit the crucial score with eight minutes to play and then the Armagh school hung on for the final moments to add a Hogan cup to the MacRory Cup that they won in March. Incredibly this was the schools first title, having no won either the MacRory or Hogan before.
Mickey Donnelly, who was part of the management team along with David Wilson and Collie Fegan, said that the win should inspire other schools
“The Hogan Cup for me personally was about the likes of St Pat’s Maghera, St Colman’s Newry, St Jarlath’s Tuam and all the rest.
“For a school like ours to come from where we have come from, I think that maybe it’s an impetus for a lot of schools like ours, that if you are well organised and you put in the hours you can achieve an awful lot.”
