Last year younger players such as Aaron Bradley, Oisin Donnelly and Conal Bohill made their breakthrough onto the senior team. Johnston expects a few more to make their start this year.

The issue for St John’s is that they have not had enough time to get prepared for the season properly. Johnston said: “Anyone who thinks that they can get a team up to championship pace in a couple of weeks is either delusional or never managed a team.

“I am delighted that the GAA people in Antrim and the players and their families that there are going to be games. But I am cautious and aware that I won’t have players available to me.”
