Steven Poacher – Too much pressure on minor players

The very best minor players are put under a lot of pressure

In his column in this week’s Gaelic Life, Steven Poacher warns that clubs must take better care of their minor players.

“Some of our GAA Footballers and hurlers are unneccessarily suffering at this time of year particularly those playing minor and u-2o level for the club and county.

“We have club minor players in our senior panel and we need them.

“They could be faced with a scenario, for example, of senior training Monday, minor game Tuesday, senior training Wednesday, minor training Thursday, senior game Friday, reserve game Sunday.

“Thankfully we are smart and we manage these lads physically and mentally by communicating between management teams and allowing games to take games to take huge priority over training, which is only common sense.”

Poacher then goes on to explain why he likes to use the Verheijan method to take care of minor players work load.

Read what that method is in the current issue of Gaelic Life.
