Steven Poacher – New York is a club to admire

The New York Feile team

In his coaching column this week, Steven Poacher took some time to retell his experience of meeting the New York coach Mickey Coleman who is originally from Tyrone.

Poacher was impressed with the passion and work that has gone in to the team in the US who were over to play in the recent Feile tournament.

“In the last four years the young New York team have travelled across and reached three semi-finals and won the division one title in 2017, an achievement that has probably gone unnoticed.

“New York don’t own their own pitch, they just lease Gaelic Park from Manhattan College and the development squads and the development squads play second fiddle as to when they can have the pitch.

“The young players actually travel from as far as an hour and a half each direction from Connecticut and New Jersey for training.

“They are determined to bridge the gap between u-14 and u-18 where there is serious drop off in playing talent once the Feile adventure ends.”
