KEVIN Cassidy believes that Slaughtneil could be the new Crossmaglen as the Derry side enjoys yet another spectacular year.

Ten Ulster titles and six All-Ireland’s between 1996 and 2012 ensured that Crossmaglen were admired the length and breadth of the country but, writing in today’s Gaelic Life, Cassidy believes that the Robert Emmet’s can step into the limelight as they chase an Ulster hurling and football double.

“The Crossmaglen flame may have lost some of its blaze in recent years and there may be a gap to be filled, but there is a small club from south Derry making huge noises at the minute and they may be the ones to step in,” he said.

“The achievements of Slaughtneil over the last number of years, in both codes, has been simply incredible. They lifted their first every Ulster Club Hurling title last weekend and within a few weeks they may also add the Ulster Club Football title to their haul for the 2016 season.”
