Kevin Cassidy: Down must learn to use McKernan properly

TOO GOOD TO WASTE…Kevin Cassidy believes that Down missed a trick against Tyrone

GAELIC Life columnist Kevin Cassidy believes that Down made a major mistake in leaving Kevin McKernan as their sweeper against Tyrone.

As revealed by GL today, McKernan is in danger of missing the Monaghan match through suspension, but Cassidy said that if he is available they must make the most of his talents.

“Down deployed Kevin Mckernan as their out and out sweeper and for me that was a massive mistake,” said Cassidy.

“Kevin is one of their better attacking players for a start but more importantly Tyrone don’t kick that much ball into their inside forward line so McKernan found himself marking space and when the Tyrone wave approached he had to go out and meet meaning he was bypassed almost all of the time and Tyrone picked off some easy scores from around the ‘D’ area.”
