In his column in this week’s Gaelic Life, John Morrison explains that one important skill a manager needs is the ability to deal with confrontation.
“If a coach has a conflict with a player or players the conflict resolution revolves around two things, what the coach wants, and how much the coach wants to maintain the relationship with the player or players.”
With that in mind Morrison offered five dos and five don’ts for managers who want to deal with confrontation.
One of those is the following:
“Don’t give or communicate solutions – only ever communicate the problem and definitely don’t say what they must do (this causes resistance).
“Allow the player to stop or change the behaviour that concerns you.
“When they come up with a solution, they are more likely to stick to it. If they find it impossible to find a solution only then should you offer one.”
