GAELIC Life hurling columnist John Martin has said that the popularity of the Munster Championship is having a detrimental impact affect on the All-Ireland Championship as a whole.

Writing in today’s edition, Martin believes that the GAA must look towards a new structure that still rewards the Munster Council.

“The provincial system that prevents us having a championship format that showcases hurling’s finest rivalries at the best time of year for hurling remains in place because of the Munster SHC cash cow,” he said.

“If there was some sort of guarantee that the revenue created by a new, fit for purpose format would replace the revenue lost by Munster GAA, surely there could be some movement on the creation of a MacCarthy Cup format that serves to promote the game?”
