Gaoth Dobhair go the ‘extra’ mile to win maiden title

Ulster Senior Club Football Final 2018

Gaoth Dobhair 0-13 Scotstown 0-12 (AET)

From Odhrán Crumley in Healy Park

Gaoth Dobhair have claimed their first ever Ulster Club title after a titanic tussle with Scotstown.

Conditions inside Healy Park were testing as the game ran into extra time before substitute Shane Ferry kicked the winning score.

Both sides were deadlocked at the break, Shane Carey and Odhran MacNiallais leading the charge for their teams on the scoring front.

In the second half, the Monaghan champions entered into a three point lead before Kevin Cassidy led a revival for his men.

Odhran MacNiallais kicked two late scores before both sides missed chances to win the game, sending us to extra time.

No quarter was given in the two periods of extra time, Shane Ferry kicking what turned out to be the winner for the Tir Chonaill men.

Rory Beggan had a chance to level the game at the death but his free from south of the 45’ dropped short of the mark.

The sound of Noel Mooney’s whistle confirmed Gaoth Dobhair as the first Donegal side to claim the Seamus MacFerran cup since 1975.
