John Morrison – Have you connected with your players?

Mickey Harte has a good connection with his players

In his column in this week’s Gaelic Life, John Morrison explains the five steps of the good coaching model.

Morrison points to four managers in particular who follow these steps, Jim Gavin, Mickey Harte, Malachy O’Rourke and Kieran McGeeney.

He says that they look for balance in their management style, and they do so by following those five steps.

The first step is making a connection with players.

“Players feel valued when coaches pay attention to them. So ask a question and really listen.

“Follow up with more questions to encourage the player to share.

“The players answers will allow the coach to know what they value, and  how they feel about life at the moment.

“When a full connection is made the coach and the squad begin their planning collectively.”

Read about the next four steps, Purpose, Awareness, Action Steps and Highlights – which includes how the players develop a no fear mindset – in the current issue of Gaelic Life.
