Steven Poacher – Dealing with turnovers

Tyrone’s style is to stand off when they turn over ball

Steven Poacher says that every team is going to have to deal with turnovers.

In Gaelic football, possession changes regularly, and he says the average amount of possession a team will get is between 14-20 seconds.

With so many turnovers in a game, Poacher says that the teams that can mentally deal with transitions from attack to defence best, will be successful.

He says: “When your team turns over possession to your opponents, you immediately want to pressure the ball and not allow the opponents to build an attack.

“At intercounty level the top teams like Mayo and Dublin will do this effectively, whereas other teams like Donegal and Tyrone prepare to instantly drop off, retreat and defend from deep.

“This is performed best by closing down the opposition quickly by through mental and physical speed and by shutting down the player in possession and also closing off his passing lanes and options.”

Poacher presents a useful drill in order to help teams prepare themselves for this approach.
