John Morrison – Get your players to think

The Dublin players have game sense

In his column in this week’s Gaelic Life, John Morrison how modern coaches get their players to think for themselves.

He says:

“The modern game is deveopled by a coaching approach called game sense which uses games as a learning tool to increase motivation, develop strategic thinking and to develop game-paced skills.

“Together these challenge players to think about what they are doing, and why they are doing it.

“Games sense sees a coach as a facilitator not a direction giver. A facililtator teases out the correct outcome with well-timed and well-worded questions.

“Coaches also need to design games that produce the desired outcome through experiential learning.”

He goes on to outline the skills needed to play the modern game, and then how to coach those skills by teaching the game sense way.
