Simon Doherty: The Magic of the Game

WOW. 2018. In years to come, I think we will all remember this hurling season as one of the greatest inter-county championships there has ever been.
It had everything. Incredible drama. Enthralling excitement. Draws. Extra time. The thrill of triumph for some. Brutal heartache for others. And ultimately, the sweet success after 45 years of waiting for the men from the Treaty county. I remember travelling home from the All-Ireland final with my father and we were listening to ‘The Marty Squad’ on RTÉ Radio One as we headed north. As we were exiting Dublin, a proud 98-year-old gentleman from Athea by the name of John Hunt was being interviewed. John, who has been a resident of Chicago for many years, was the first chairman of the American GAA board and his enthusiasm and passion for Limerick hurling was evident to all who had the pleasure of witnessing his interview. One of the most intriguing aspects of his dialogue with Marty and the crew was when he noted that, “it will inspire young fellas from Pallasgreen and Na Piarsaigh” to lift the camán into their hand and never look back.
