John Morrison – Coaches, don’t give too much guidance

Coaches must teach players to think for themselves.

In his column in this week’s Gaelic Life, John Morrison explains how to improve players’ decision making skills.

“I do believe we are all born with the ability to make decisions. All to often, however, we are given decisions by others and expected to act on them. This happens too often in sports coaching to the detriment of the players.

“While we are born with an ability to make decisions – which is the essence of child’s play – being excellent and effective decision makers in sport comes from many hours of deliberate practice.

“Thus coaches should maximise decision making in their coaching both inside and outside formal coaching sessions.”

Morrison goes on to reveal eight ways to stimulate decision making among players.
