McHugh relieved as Kilcar finally reach promised land

The McHugh brothers clinched a long-awaited senior championship final win with Kilcar

LAST weekend’s Donegal championship win for Kilcar was not only a crowning of the best team in the county, but also a momentous day for the parish.

The club had not won the senior title for 24 years, and after the heartbreak of last year, when they lost to Glenswilly, the win brought long-awaited joy to that small corner of Donegal.

Mark McHugh explained how much it meant to him personally to finally pick up a senior championship medal.

“It was the one medal that I hadn’t got. Going round different clubs that had won different championships, you knew what it meant to them. I was very emotional after the game on Sunday.

“There were a few moments after the game when I was with the family, and friends that I had played with since I was nine or ten, and we could enjoy the moment.

“It goes to all the people in Kilcar, the ones who run the bar, the ones who run the shops. We live and breathe football down here. It was a monkey on the back that we needed to get over. And we have it.”
