GAELIC Life columnist Finnian Moriarty has defender Cillian O’Connor after his crucial missed free in Sunday’s All-Ireland final loss to Dublin.
Moriarty discussed the incident and O’Connor’s impact on the sport, Moriarty gives an insight into the free-takers he has worked with.
“Within my time at Armagh I got an insight into the mental resilience and approach required to be a free-taker. Amongst those trusted with the unenviable task, from Oisin McConville to Stevie McDonnell to Aaron and Tony Kernan, character traits such as persistence, resiliency, humility, dedication and confidence could be found in all men.
“Getting onto the training field early and staying late afterwards to practice until the groundsman got irate, these individuals tried to ensure that when called upon their technique was honed enough that no distraction would take away from their connection with the ball. The fear of missing big kicks indirectly chained these players to the training field for countless hours.”
