Steven Poacher – Armagh and Monaghan must play defence

Monaghan’s defence will be tested heavily this weekend

In his column in this week’s Gaelic Life Steven Poacher reminds everyone that a team must have a good defensive plan if they are to make any impact in the championship.

He points out that teams like Down, Westmeath did not go any further because their defences weren’t up to scratch.

He also suggested that their defence is suspect.

This weekend, he says both Monaghan and Armagh need strong defensive performances, or Tyrone and Dublin will cruise into the semi-final.

“That is the dream semi-final but it’s football, it’s sport and anything could happen.

“As a neutral I love being detached emotionally from the game and looking at all the things tactical about it, hopefully Armagh and Monaghan will realise this weekend the best form of attack for them is defence.

“There are a numbers of factors to consider when coaching defensive play in your team both individually and collectively.”

He goes on to highlight four aspect of good defensive practice. He also suggests a good drill for coaches to use.
