Slaughtneil players celebrate after their win over Kilcoo

Slaughtneil completed their incredible treble yesterday, when they added the Ulster Senior Football Club Championship title to the hurling and camogie ones which they won earlier this year.

They are the first club to have won the three trophies in the same season, and as a result have lodged their name firmly in the annals of history.

They beat Kilcoo 0-12 to 0-9 in what was a great all-round performance from the Derry champions. Shane McGuigan scored five points, Brendan Rogers scored two while Chrissy McKaigue was excellent at centre half back, and hit a point.

Slaughtneil can now look forward to a bid to win the All-Ireland club championship in both hurling and football. They have played in the All-Ireland series before. They beat Austin Stacks in the 2015 semi-final, but lost to Corofin in the decider.

Slaughtneil begin their All-Ireland campaign next week (December 10/11), when they play the British champions St Kiernan’s at Greenford in London. Should they win that game they will go forward and play the winners of the Leinster Championship, either St Vincent’s or Rhode.

For now though, Slaughtneil are basking in the glory of their win, and enjoying the praise on Twitter.
