Tyrone might have run out five point winners, but this game was in the balance right up to the final quarter.
Collie Holmes looked to have given the National League champions the initiative with a goal on 45 minutes, but Derry hit back immediately with a goal of their own from Paddy Bradley to level the scores again at 1-9 apiece.
It was the Red Hands who kicked on though, while Derry faded, with Dooher and Canavan picking off the scores that helped put clear blue water between the sides
Peter Canavan top scored for Tyrone with seven points, followed closely by Stephen O’Neill with six. Collie Holmes got a goal, while Brian Dooher hit a brace. The balance of Tyrone’s scores fell to Gerard Cavlan and Cormac McAnallen.
Anthony Tohill led the way for the Oak Leafers, hitting matching Canavan seven point haul, while Paddy Bradley contributed a goal and two points. The remainder of Derry’s scores came from Geoffrey McGonigle, Dermot Heaney and Fergal Doherty.
