Coulter out to avoid 'tanking'

Down's Benny Coulter

DOWN’S ace attacker Benny Coulter admits that his side cannot afford to suffer another big loss at the hands of Cork this weekend, but insists that it is the performance rather than the result which matters most with Championship looming large on the horizon.

The Mayobridge man is keen to play down his side’s chances of upsetting the odds, insisting that the Mourne men are much more focused on getting things right for their Championship opener against Fermanagh than booking their place in a league final.

“The way we’re looking at it is that we’re getting an extra competitive game before Fermanagh in the Championship. In terms of priority though, it’s not a big one. But at the same time, you don’t want to get another tanking from them.

“We’re looking to be competitive. Each of the last three games we’ve played them, they’ve given us a bit of a tanking. The result isn’t the be-all and end-all for us, but the performance is, so it’s important for us that way.”
